Although, by and large, the pump diesel that we have in the UK is of higher quality across the board due to fuel regulation, there are MOTUL fuel additives that can help to keep the engine in your vehicle running at maximum efficiency.

Octane is a more common term when talking about performance from fuel and quality. A higher octane rating will give petrol a higher resistance to compression or spontaneous combustion to prevent knocking. However, a higher cetane rating refers to diesel and will give cause the diesel to ignite more readily and minimises the delay between the injection of the fuel into the chamber and when combustion occurs. The standard pump diesel in the UK has a cetane rating of 51 with some higher cetane ratings from premium pump diesels.

The higher the cetane number, the less delay between diesel injection and combustion within the chamber.

But what does a higher cetane rating actually do?

The faster ignition leads to a more complete combustion within the chamber and less non-ignited fuel buildup. Improving diesel combustion efficiency also improves the start-up of the engine which is particularly beneficial to diesel engines in colder weather.

Harmful contaminants can be held within the engine or fuel system with incomplete combustion and more emissions will be produced from the tailpipe or for the diesel particulate filter to collect and a more efficient engine will help with fuel efficiency too.

Maintaining the efficiency, smooth running and performance of a diesel engine is not a one-bottle fix. Cetane booster is recommended as part of the range of fuel system cleaners from MOTUL.

When cleaning a car or van, it is recommended to start at the top and work down. This makes sense, as spraying dirt from the bottom of the car upwards will create more work. Although it cannot be seen, the principle is the same when cleaning a fuel system.

Starting with the injectors, following with a clean of the fuel system and then preventing or removing clogging from the diesel particulate filter. Once this process has taken place, maintaining engine efficiency and reducing spontaneous combustion or preignition with a Cetane Booster will maintain and extend the life of the fuel system.

Each fuel additive should be poured into the fuel tank prior to the car being fully filled with fuel.

Repeated use of fuel system cleaners and fuel performance boosters will provide the maximum efficiency and results.
