Diesel particulate filters (DPFs) are fitted to all modern diesel cars and vans. Since Euro 5 emissions standards in 2009, DPFs have been a mandatory component of diesel vehicles.

How do DPFs  work?

Like catalytic converters, DPFs reduce the amount of harmful emissions from the exhaust of the vehicle. DPFs capture particulates and soot created from the combustion process and store it. Periodically, the soot will have to be burned off and this process is known as regeneration. This prevents the harmful emissions and black smoke that can be seen from older diesel engine vehicles.

Diesel Particulate Filter Problems

DPFs can become blocked over time. This is often caused by short journeys at low speeds. When the DPF starts to become blocked, the engine will not run efficiently and engine performance will be dramatically impacted. Over time, if the DPF continues to clog then the DPF will have to be regenerated or cleaned. If the DPF has hardened ash and soot within it, it is likely it will need replacing. Replacements are costly and proper maintenance is key.

MOTUL DPF Cleaner is designed to clean the DPF and prevent early replacement. In turn, this will allow the DPF to function properly, giving restored engine performance and fuel efficiency.

Maintaining the efficiency, smooth running and performance of a diesel engine is not a one-bottle fix. DPF Cleaner is recommended as part of the range of fuel system cleaners from MOTUL.

When cleaning a car or van, it is recommended to start at the top and work down. This makes sense, as spraying dirt from the bottom of the car upwards will create more work. Although it cannot be seen, the principle is the same when cleaning a fuel system.

Starting with the injectors, following with a clean of the fuel system and then preventing or removing clogging from the diesel particulate filter. Once this process has taken place, maintaining engine efficiency and reducing spontaneous combustion or preignition with a Cetane Booster will maintain and extend the life of the fuel system.

Each fuel additive should be poured into the fuel tank prior to the car being fully filled with fuel.

Repeated use of fuel system cleaners and fuel performance boosters will provide the maximum efficiency and results.
