The Toyota GR Yaris has quickly become a cult classic in the UK and the performance credentials have been noted.

Although it shares the Yaris name, the two cars only share wing mirrors, headlights and a wheelbase. Everything else is completely different.

That means the oils and lubricants have to be different, partly because there are not many people running nitrous through the standard Yaris, something which is a very real possibility with the GR.

ENGINE OIL

To cope with the demands of the 268bhp generated from the standard three-cylinder engine, Motul recommends 8100 Eco-Lite 0W-20 to keep the engine running efficiently and at the recommended viscosity from Toyota.

The Motul UK Technical Manager, Has Tahier, recommends alternative oils and lubricants for a modified GR Yaris.

For light modifications, the new performance road oil is recommended, 8100 Power 0W-20. Like the 8100 Eco-Lite, the viscosity is 0W-20 for lower internal friction, but the oil is formulated with Ester technology to provide a higher level of protection for engine components. As this is a performance oil for the road, normal service intervals can be adhered to.

For more extreme modifications, where the GR Yaris has exceeded the original horsepower by some margin, this calls for 300V. Motul 300V is a racing oil that maximises protection and performance for cars on and off the track. Formulation technology in 300V has been refined over decades of experience on the racetracks of the world- from sprints to endurance.

Depending on the level of modification, the 300V Power 0W-20 is recommended as well as the 300V Power 5W-30 in extreme levels of modification as the heavier viscosity provides extra protection at higher temperatures. Although 300V can be used for performance road cars, it must be changed every 3000 miles regardless of service interval recommendations.

BRAKE FLUID

Stopping is just as important as going. The GR Yaris requires a DOT 4 standard brake fluid which requires a dry boiling point of 230 degrees Celsius and a wet boiling point of 155 degrees Celsius. Motul DOT 3&4 meets and exceeds the requirements of DOT 4.

For extra braking performance, Motul has a range of racing brake fluids that are compatible with DOT 4 braking systems. RBF 600, 660 and 700. All of these racing brake fluids have been formulated to cope with extreme temperatures and minimize brake fade. This keeps braking performance consistent for carbon, ceramic or conventional steel discs.

GEAR AND DIFFERENTIAL OILS

The GR Yaris uses some clever differential technology for the four-wheel drive system that can change the power delivery to the wheels in different driving modes. For the transfer box and rear differential without limited slip differentials, Motul Gear 300 75W-90 is recommended. For a GR Yaris with a rear limited slip diff, Motul Gear 300 LS 75W-90 is advised. These transmission and diff oils have been formulated for maximum performance on and off the track.

For the manual transmission, Motul Gear Power FE 75W is recommended as a very fluid gearbox oil for a standard or modified GR Yaris. Gear Power FE has been formulated to meet the needs of the latest gearbox technology requiring low viscosity fluid and capable of heavy loads.

COOLANT

The GR Yaris cooling system requires an OAT formulation. Motul Auto Cool Optimal provides the latest in coolant technology as well as providing an anti-corrosive protection throughout the cooling system to prevent future maintenance issues.
