All vehicles on the road with an internal combustion engine already use additives. In the UK, pump fuel contains a blend of additives within the fuel formulation that aid in maintaining the performance of the engine and cleanliness within the fuel line.

Similarly to pump fuel, engine oil is formulated with a blend of additives to maintain engine components and contamination.

Although these additives pass through the oil and fuel systems in small quantities, over time there can be clogging, performance can be affected, and emission reduction systems can become inhibited. This can lead to an inefficient engine, corroded components, a higher fuel consumption and failed emission tests during an MOT test.

There are a number of different MOTUL fuel, oil and cooling system additives that have been formulated to increase the lifespan of components, improve efficiency and increase performance.

Each fuel additive should be poured into the fuel tank prior to the car being fully filled with fuel and there are a range of petrol and diesel-specific additives.

For petrol there is: System Keep Clean, Injector Cleaner, Cat Converter Cleaner and Octane Booster.

System Keep Clean is designed to be poured into a full fuel tank every 4-6 weeks. The additive is then pulled through the fuel system with petrol and removes clogging and resins. Any moisture in the system will be removed as the additive binds to water and burns it off during the combustion process.

Injector Cleaner is designed to be used every 12-16 weeks and targets the cleaning process on the fuel injection system. Clogged fuel injectors can cause inefficient combustion and a decrease in engine power.

Cat Converter Cleaner is designed to be used every 6 months for a targeted clean of the catalytic converter. Emission reduction system failures are one of the most common reasons for MOT test fails and damage or clogging can be costly.

Octane Booster is designed to increase the octane rating of the petrol in your vehicle, causing the fuel to combust in a more controlled way. Using Octane Booster regularly will avoid knocking and pre-ignition within the combustion chamber.

For diesel vehicles, there is: System Keep Clean, Injector Cleaner, DPF Cleaner and Cetane Booster.

System Keep Clean is designed to be poured into a full fuel tank every 4-6 weeks. The additive is then pulled through the fuel system with diesel and removes clogging and resins.

DPF Cleaner is designed to be used every 6 months for a targeted clean of the diesel particulate filter. Emission reduction system failures are one of the most common reasons for MOT test fails and damage or clogging can be costly.

Cetane Booster is designed to increase the cetane rating of the diesel in your vehicle, causing the fuel to combust under compression more easily. Using Cetane Booster regularly will improve engine performance and combustion will be more efficient.

Regular combined use of additives, cleaning the entire fuel system from the fuel injection system all the way through to the emission reduction system. This process prolongs the life of the fuel system and helps to avoid costly maintenance costs.

Maintenance Additives

As well as fuel additives, there are also additives for the engine oil and coolant system.

Oil leaks are often caused by aging gaskets that have lost their original elasticity and, in some cases, small leaks through micro cracks. Engine Oil Stop Leak has been formulated to restore gaskets as well as sealing micro cracks within the oil system without causing clogging. This will maintain the oil pressure and protection for the engine components as well as prevent staining on driveways or garage floors. Engine Oil Stop Leak can be added at any time and is simply poured into the engine oil within the engine.

Regular oil changes are an important part of maintaining the health of the engine. For a thorough clean of the engine before fresh oil is added, Engine Flush can be poured into the engine oil and allow the engine to idle for around 10-20 minutes. During this time, clogging and microparticles will be removed from internal components and will leave the engine when the old oil is drained.

Similarly to Engine Oil Stop Leak, Radiator Stop Leak has been formulated to restore seals and gaskets within the cooling system as well as sealing micro cracks. A rise in engine temperature, caused by a cooling system leak, can cause damage to engine components so maintaining the cooling system is important for engine health. Radiator Stop Leak can be poured into the cooling system at any time.

Why use Motul additives?

Fuel system cleaners, preventative and maintenance as well as performance boosting additives can often be viewed as an unnecessary purchase. That can often be because there is no visual evidence of the difference an additive has made. Cleaning a car is a very visual process and the difference a thorough clean of the car has made is seen immediately and the lasting effects prevent corrosion from road grime. However, the average motorist won’t be able to see if the fuel injectors are clogged or dirty but the difference an Injector Cleaner can make to engine efficiency and lifespan of the component is hugely effective. The same applies for System Keep Clean and Cat Converter Cleaner or DPF Cleaner. Regular usage of these cleaning additives will save money spent on parts or fixes, time spent in garages or on the side of the road and improved performance of the engine for a prolonged period.

You can read more about the benefits and improvements of each of the fuel system cleaners, preventative and maintenance as well as performance boosting additives can make to the efficient running of your vehicle.
